[Knowledge Series] Introduction to Disaster Risk Financing for the Agriculture Sector
On February 24, the Disaster Risk Financing and Insurance Program hosted the first session of its Knowledge Series on Strengthening Financial Resilience in Agriculture. The webinar was kicked off by introductory remarks by Olivier Mahul (Practice Manager, EFNRF, WBG) and Lara Evans (Social Protection Advisor, USAID). John Plevin (Financial Sector Specialist, EFNRF, WBG) presented in detail on Disaster Risk Financing (DRF) fundaments. Charles Stutley (Senior Agriculture Insurance Consultant, EFNRF, WBG) explained a variety of risks to agriculture and rural livelihoods and how DRF principles apply in managing risks in Agriculture. James Muli Sinah (Agriculture Finance and Insurance Specialist, EAEF1, WBG) elaborated on the DRFA case study in Kenya.
The webinar was facilitated by Kaavya Krishna (Knowledge Management Officer, EFNRF, WBG), featuring a live polling function to understand the participants better and interact with the audience. A lively Q& A session discussed various topics such as the feasibility of using market-based instruments, risk mitigation methods in agriculture, etc. The virtual session brought together over 170 participants from client countries, international organizations, private sector companies, non-governmental organizations, and academia.
The Knowledge Series features a series of interactive webinars and associated fact sheets, taking place monthly from February to September 2021. Invited speakers are industry experts, government clients, and seasoned practitioners from the World Bank Group and international development agencies.
