2022

On December 09, 2021, in partnership with Switzerland's State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), the World Bank Group's (WBG) Disaster Risk Financing and Insurance Program (DRFIP) hosted the 6th session of the Knowledge Exchange Series. The session focused on the Catastrophe Risk Insurance Market Development. The series is a continuation, in virtual formats, of traditional knowledge exchange events that take place every two years to empower countries under the program through sharing their experience and knowledge in building financial resilience.

The webinar commenced with opening remarks from Olivier Mahul (Practice Manager, Crisis and Disaster Risk Finance (CDRF), Finance, Competitiveness & Innovation [FCI] Global Practice, World Bank Group [WBG]). Tatiana Skalon (Financial Sector Specialist, CDRF, FCI Global Practice, WBG) delivered the framing presentation that introduced the topic and key operational considerations of designing catastrophe risk insurance by governments, as well as the lessons learned. Abdeljalil El Hafre (Division Head, Insurance and Social Welfare Division, Treasury and External Finance Department, Ministry of Economy and Finance, Morocco), Eduard (Eddie) Held (Managing Director, Swiss Elemental Pool, Reinsurance, Swiss Insurance Association), and Harriet Boughton (General Counsel, Flood Re, United Kingdom) shared country experiences from Morocco, Switzerland and United Kingdom about structuring their catastrophe risk (re)insurance programs to address affordability, higher insurance penetration, and sustainability of their programs.

The webinar was facilitated by Samantha Cook (Senior Financial Sector Specialist, CDRF, FCI Global Practice, WBG). It featured a live poll function to better understand and interact with the audience. Over 100 participants from client countries, international organizations, private sector companies, non-governmental organizations, and academia attended the event.
